Sample Itinerary of New Zealand South Island

Days 1-3

Start from Christchurch and stop off at the International Antarctic Centre where you can experience the atmosphere of the last remaining untouched wilderness. Head off to visit New Zealand national bird, the Kiwi at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve then take the Christchurch Gondola for a breathtaking view of the city below.

Days 3-4

Leave Christchurch and head on to Mount Cook where you can walk through the ice carved landscape or take a scenic flight (weather permitting) before watching the stars far from the city lights, perfect for viewing the heavens.

Days 4-5

Head to Dunedin, founded by Scottish settlers, and the Otago Peninsula which is home to the yellow-eyed penguin, the rarest in the world. Be sure to visit Larnach Castle, New Zealand's only authentic castle. Visit Speight's Brewery or Cadbury World. Dunedin also has great beaches and great nature walks.

Days 5-7

Depart Dunedin and travel across to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park. Here you can visit the Glow Worm caves, do some fishing or have a game of mini-golf.

Days 7-8

Travel along one of the world's finest drives, the road to Milford Sound, which passes the Mirror Lakes and through the one mile long Homer tunnel. Cruise on the serene waters of this natural wonder. View majestic waterfalls, sheer cliffs and Mitre Peak. Return to Te Anau for the evening.

Days 8-10

Today journey to the alpine town of Queenstown. From here, your days can be filled with one adventure after another; pan for gold at Arrowtown, go jetboating on the Shotover River, go horse riding, not forgetting A J Hackett Bungy. For those who enjoy something more relaxed, Queenstown is also a destination for gourmet food, golf and spa treatments.

Days 10-11

Spend a leisurely day getting to Wanaka and explore the natural surrounds taking in the local wineries, Pinot Noir is the speciality of the region.

Days 11-15

Travel back to Christchurch for a few days rest and relaxation before your onward flight or better still head up to Kaikoura to see the majestic Whales which can be seen all year round (booking essential). This town is renowned for its fresh fish and the friendliness of its welcome, it is considered by many to be a 'jewel in the crown' of the South Island.

Day 15

Head to Christchurch airport for your flight back to the UK.
