Memphis and New Orleans Holidays

New Orleans French Quarter

New Orleans French Quarter

Memphis and New Orleans holidays filled with rock ‘n roll, jazz and blues, along with great barbequed ribs and nightlife, you can’t go wrong with this holiday. Memphis and New Orleans together- that is magic!

Memphis is often referred to as the birthplace of rock ‘n roll. Here, a young man with grinding hips and a lip that curled, became a legend. Elvis Presley, known as ‘The King’, made his home in Graceland. This mansion today is a shrine to all things Elvis. Stroll through for a glimpse into the life of a king. Pink Cadillacs, blue suede shoes and an elaborate guitar-shaped pool are here for millions of fans to see.

Where did Elvis record many of his hits? At the same place as B.B. King, Johnny Cash and many more famous names- Sun Studio. Stand in the spot where Elvis stood. Look at the recording equipment. See pictures and memorabilia and even get a chance to hold the mic used by Johnny Cash and Elvis. Today this studio hosts the greats like Maroon 5.

Memphis is home to a large and fun zoo. See pandas with their bamboo, grizzly bear feedings that adults will enjoy, and splash pads and rides that the children will enjoy. Trainers work with the animals and do informative shows. Watch the sea lion show. See the white tiger swimming in his pool. This is fun for all ages.

When you get hungry, stop and get the dish that makes Memphis famous- barbeque! Central BBQ has slabs of ribs, smoky and sweet. Baked beans, mac and cheese, and cole slaw- this is barbeque heaven! Sit inside or on the patio where the live band plays. Enjoy people-watching as you savor these delicious meats.

If you don’t like barbeque, don’t worry. Memphis has plenty of food offerings. Places like Déjà vu are waiting to serve up yummy creole creations like seafood gumbo and Mardi Gras pasta. Bananas Foster are flamed right at your tableside. This is New Orleans cooking in Memphis.

Speaking of New Orleans- that is the second part of your New Orleans holiday! New Orleans is full of Ju-Ju, voo doo, and parties. Famous for Mardi Gras, the huge annual party where people parade down Bourbon Street in costumes, on stilts, with beads and elaborate hats and, of course, drinks. Visit the French Quarter where restaurants and bars are open day and night and jazz fills the streets. There are also shops and voodoo museums.

Take a walking ghost tour to hear costumed guides tell the history of this city. NOLA Ghost Hunting Tours is actually a paranormal team that bring their equipment and allow guests to use it as they hunt spirits in some of the most haunted places in New Orleans. Tie in your ghost tour with a visit to the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum. Here, the history of superstitious bayou people lives in relics, artifacts and the macabre. See voodoo dolls, strange carved faces and the mummified remains of a black cat used in bad Ju Ju.

New Orleans Pharmacy Museum shows visitors through the medicinal practices of the 1800-1900’s. See hundreds of old bottles, (some still containing the original medicines), medical books, apothecary sets and leech jars. See the baby bottles with lead nipples and view the upstairs to find tools for midwives. The Coca- Cola soda fountain is where fizzy drinks were made and sold to aid in digestion. They contained actual cocaine in them. There are even love potions and peace powders.

No trip to New Orleans is complete without some great Creole food and smooth jazz music, usually served together. Langlois is a unique dining experience. Customers here get to help prepare creole dishes for their meal. Tips and hands-on techniques help visitors take home the taste of New Orleans jumbo and more. Memphis and New Orleans- a holiday not to miss!

"Many thanks for your effort in arranging the Disney holiday for us. It was superb and the accommodation, restaurant recommendations, location and everything else was spot on. We had a little hiccup with rental car collection, I thought it was downtown but it was on Magic Kingdom. Nothing in the scheme of everything else though.

We found the dining plan great and fitted in well with the family and in laws. California Grill on Mother's Day was great. The free visit back to view the Magic Kingdom fireworks at 10 that night topped off the day.

Wolfgang Puck have a gem in Downtown with an excellent counter serve. Recently opened. We stumbled on Raglan Road Downtown too. A lively joint with Irish dancing. Food was one of the best and kids got invited up for a jig too!

The weather was hotter than expected but we didn't complain. A little drop of rain on one morning and night so did well avoiding the storms I remember as a kid "
