Rocky Mountaineer Route: First Passage to the West - Vancouver to Banff via Kamloops, or from Vancouver to Lake Louise via Kamloops.

Rocky Mountaineer Canada Holiday highlights on this route include:

Cisco Crossing

  • Where: Between Kamloops and Vancouver.
  • What: The Cisco Crossing is where the train tracks meet, and the Cisco Bridge is the jewel of this area. Standing out against the natural landscape, this truss bridge is an epic sight to behold and cross on the Rocky Mountaineer. Be sure to look down at the fast flowing, white water below!

Hoodoos

  • Where: Between Lake Louise and Banff.
  • What: Huge rock formations that stick out from the landscape, and legend has it that these were once people turned to pillars by witchcraft centuries ago. We don’t know about all that, but what we do know is that the Hoodoo Trail offers truly amazing views out over the Bow River Valley – be sure to grab the window seat for this one!

Spiral Tunnels

  • Where: Between Kamloops and Lake Louise.
  • What: An epically constructed railway track that has been confusing travelers since its opening in 1909. Curving around what’s known as Big Hill, the tunnels help trains navigate the steep mountains in the Rockies. Today, a highlight is seeing the beautiful landscape unfold when you emerge from the tunnel!

Banff

  • Where: The final/first stop for your Rocky Mountaineer Holiday: First Passage to the West - Vancouver to Banff via Kamloops, or from Vancouver to Lake Louise via Kamloops.
  • What: Banff National Park is often said to be one of the most stunning towns in the world. The town of Banff itself sits in the shadow of Tunnel Mountain and Banff National Park is full of amazing wildlife, epic scenery and of course, the spectacular Lake Louise. Banff is a lively town with shops, restaurants, and bars but also it feels somehow completely cut off from the outside world as you gaze up at the mountains towering above you.

Lake Louise

  • Where: The final/first stop along the Rocky Mountaineer Route: First Passage to the West - Vancouver to Banff via Kamloops, or from Vancouver to Lake Louise via Kamloops.
  • What: A truly awe-inspiring location, Lake Louise is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Lake Louise shines a brilliant, unbelievable shade of turquoise and is towered over by the Victoria Glacier. Visitors can stay in the small hamlet on the shores of Lake Louise, home to the iconic Fairmont Château Lake Louise that has been wowing visitors since its opening. Having afternoon tea on the Fairmont Château Lake Louise terrace is a must while here!

Kamloops

  • Where: An overnight stop along the Rocky Mountaineer Route: First Passage to the West - Vancouver to Banff via Kamloops, or from Vancouver to Lake Louise via Kamloops.
  • What: Kamloops is a lesser-known gem of Canada, but a gem nonetheless! Kamloops is surrounded by differing landscapes including rainforests and snow-tipped mountains making it a great location for outdoor adventure!

Vancouver

  • Where: The final/first stop along the Rocky Mountaineer Route: First Passage to the West - Vancouver to Banff via Kamloops, or from Vancouver to Lake Louise via Kamloops.
  • What: Vancouver is a popular Canadian city and many visitors to Canada will spend a couple of extra nights in Vancouver before beginning, or ending, their Rocky Mountaineer Holiday. Home to large forests, wonderful public parks (Stanley Park), epic museums, diverse culture and plenty of amazing bars and restaurants, Vancouver is the perfect end or beginning to a Canadian holiday! Don’t forget to explore Vancouver Island, even if just for the day, while in Vancouver!
