Sri Lanka divides neatly into a handful of distinct regions, and most holidays combine two or three of them into one trip.
Home to Sri Lanka's most extraordinary ancient sites, the Cultural Triangle is where you'll find Sigiriya Rock Fortress — a 5th-century palace built atop a 200-metre granite outcrop - alongside the cave temples of Dambulla and the ruined royal city of Polonnaruwa. It's an essential stop on any first-time Sri Lanka holiday and pairs naturally with a stay near Habarana or Sigiriya itself.
Sri Lanka's spiritual heart, Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth and a beautiful lake-side setting. From here, the train journey into the hill country — through Nuwara Eliya and the tea plantations around Ella - is regularly named one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Expect cool mountain air, rolling green tea estates, waterfalls, and colonial-era plantation bungalows.
The south coast is Sri Lanka's classic beach escape, anchored by the Dutch colonial fort town of Galle. Mirissa and Hikkaduwa offer golden sand, surf, and some of the best whale-watching in the world (blue and sperm whales are regularly spotted November to April). This region is best combined with the Cultural Triangle or hill country for a complete first-time itinerary.
Quieter and less developed than the south, the east coast, around Passikudah and Trincomalee, has calm, shallow waters, excellent diving and snorkelling, and a real sense of getting off the beaten path. Best visited May to September, when the south-west monsoon affects the other side of the island.
Sri Lanka has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, and Yala National Park is the best place to see one, alongside elephants, sloth bears and prolific birdlife. Wilpattu, in the north-west, is quieter and home to the world's second-largest leopard population — a great alternative for travellers wanting a more exclusive safari experience.
Sri Lanka's capital is often used purely as a flight hub, but it's worth a night or two in its own right — think artisan boutiques, colonial architecture, rooftop bars and some of the country's best seafood restaurants.
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that affect opposite coasts, which means there's actually a good time to visit somewhere on the island all year round.
December to March - the best time for the south and west coasts (Galle, Mirissa, Colombo) and the Cultural Triangle. Dry, sunny, and the most popular window for UK travellers.
May to September - the best time for the east coast (Passikudah, Trincomalee), while the south-west sees more rain. Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya) stays relatively mild year-round, though it can be cooler and wetter from October to January.
If your itinerary combines beach and cultural sightseeing, December to March is generally the easiest time to plan around.
Most first-time visitors spend 10–14 nights in Sri Lanka, which allows enough time to combine the Cultural Triangle, hill country and a south coast beach stay without feeling rushed. Shorter breaks of 7–9 nights work well if you focus on just two regions (for example Cultural Triangle and beach), while 14+ nights gives room to add a twin-centre extension to the Maldives, Seychelles or India.
UK passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit Sri Lanka, which can be applied for online in advance of travel. Our Travel Advisors can guide you through the process when you book.
Direct flights from London to Colombo take approximately 10.5–11 hours. We work with a range of airlines and UK departure airports to find the best route for your trip.
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas, and major credit cards are accepted in most hotels and larger restaurants, though cash is useful for smaller towns and markets.
Sri Lanka package holidays with Charter Travel start from around £2340pp for a 10-night trip including flights, accommodation and a private driver/guide. Prices vary depending on the season, hotel category and number of regions visited — speak to our Travel Advisors for a tailored quote.
