Driving the Overseas Highway

The Overseas Highway (US-1) carries you from the mainland to Key West across 42 bridges, with the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. The most famous is the Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon, where the water stretches to the horizon on both sides.

The drive from Miami to Key West takes about 3.5 to 4 hours without stops. We recommend taking at least two days, stopping to snorkel, see the sea turtles and watch the sunset along the way. Look out for the green mile markers, which count down from the mainland to zero in Key West; Keys addresses are given by mile marker.

The Keys, island by island

Explore the Florida Keys island by island, each offering its own character, scenery and experiences.

  • Key Largo: The first island and the diving capital of the Keys, home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
  • Islamorada: Laid-back luxury, world-class fishing and some of the Keys' best waterfront resorts.
  • Marathon & the Lower Keys: The Seven Mile Bridge, the Turtle Hospital, Bahia Honda's beaches and the tiny Key deer.
  • Key West: Colourful, quirky and lively, with Duval Street, Hemingway's house and the nightly sunset celebration.

How Long to Spend in The Keys

  • 3 to 4 nights: Drive straight to Key West and base yourself there, with a stop or two on the way.
  • 5 to 7 nights: Split your stay between Key Largo or Islamorada and Key West.
  • 10+ nights: Add Miami and the Everglades for a full South Florida road trip.

Florida Keys Holidays FAQs

Can you fly direct to The Florida Keys from London?

No, however you can fly to Miami direct from London and then fly onwards to Key West (about 1 hour).

When is the best time to visit the Florida Keys?

December to April brings dry, sunny weather with highs in the mid-20s °C. Summer is hotter and more humid with calmer seas, which is good for snorkelling. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.

Can I fly to Key West?

There are no direct flights from the UK. Most people fly to Miami and drive, which is half the fun. Connecting flights to Key West are possible if you'd rather skip the drive.

Are there beaches in the Keys?

Yes, but fewer than you might expect, because the reef keeps waves small and much of the coast is mangrove. The best are at Bahia Honda State Park, Sombrero Beach in Marathon and Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West.

Is the Keys good for families?

Yes. Snorkelling trips, the Turtle Hospital and dolphin encounters suit children well, and many resorts have pools and calm lagoons.
