Crete holidays are one of the largest of the Greek islands, and offer many things to do and see. Crete is home to mountainous landscapes but also miles of sandy beaches and turquoise waters, ancient ruins, cosmopolitan ambience and plenty of restaurants and fine dining. The old Venetian port in Chania is one of the most beautiful spots on the island to eat, drink, wander and watch the amazing sunset over the Mediterranean Sea. Trying the traditional drink raki is a must whilst visiting Crete – it can be sampled in many taverns including the unique Kanali Tavern in Elounda. Trying traditional dishes whilst in Crete is also a must and there’s no better place to sample than at To Antikristo restaurant in Perivola where lamb is cooked traditionally, antikristo-style: slow roasted for hours over a wooden fire, with just a little salt rubbed in. Elafonisi beach is located on Crete and happens to be considered by many as Greece’s best beach - the low-lying inlet is tinted pink thanks to crushed up shells and the white-golden sand is surrounded by a turquoise lagoon of calm waters. Perfect for sunbathing, taking a dip, relaxing and letting the little one’s play! Those fascinated by ancient history and Crete culture will love visiting the archaeological site of Knossos, said date to around 7000BC and be ‘Europe’s oldest city’. Those feeling more adventurous on their Greece holidays will want to make the most of Crete’s dramatic landscape and hike through the Samaria Gorge - a huge national park with a dramatic 16km hiking route. Crete is full of beautiful architecture, beaches, traditions, food and nature and perfect for a fun filled family holiday or romantic couples get away!
