Santorini holidays are one of the most pictured and beautiful places in the world – and not just because it once was the crater to a volcano! In Greek tradition, the picturesque scenery is almost as if it was hand-crafted by Zeus himself: whitewashed villages surround the island with beautiful views over the Mediterranean, rural vineyards run over the island and the black and red volcanic beaches of Santorini are truly spectacular!
Those on the hunt for some traditional Greece holiday seafood will want to visit the fishing village of Ammoudi Bay where there are plenty of traditional seafood taverns to sample from – and beautiful blue waters to swim in! Culture and history lovers will want to venture out to Akrotiri or “Greece’s Pompeii” where preserved ruins from 1450 BC are still visible and visitors can walk around the site to get a glimpse into ancient Minoan civilization. Those looking for a unique and picture-perfect experience will want to visit Red Beach – aptly named, this beach is covered in red and amber sand highlighting Santorini’s volcanic past and making for a perfectly unique photo opportunity! There are other volcanic beaches on the island too: Perissa, Perivolos and Kamari are some of the nicest and definitely ones to check out!
Santorini just so happens to be one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world and visiting a traditional winery is a must! Sigalas Winery is a perfect example of the traditional vineyards that still harvests grapes with the ancient koulara technique – vines woven into basket-like forms. Santorini’s most infamous icon are the whitewashed towns atop the cliff tops surrounding the island – the Caldera towns. Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira are a few of the whitewashed towns that offer the iconic scenery, views and accommodation to experience Santorini in an unforgettable way. Is there anything better than sitting atop a Santorini cliff on your beautiful balcony watching the sun set over the Mediterranean?
We personally love the iconic boutique cave hotel’s that are carved right into the cliff side, complete with infinity pools and alfresco dining!
