The White Mountains National Forest is an 800,000-acre National Forest in New Hampshire that is full of quaint New England towns and villages including North Conway, Lincoln/ North Woodstock, Bretton Woods, and Sugar Hill. Each town has its own personality, but they are all home to quintessential New England architecture, boutique stores, charming Bed and Breakfasts, and beautiful scenery where you can reconnect with nature.

Things to do in the White Mountains Nation Forest – New Hampshire

Visit North Conway: North Conway is a charming New England village within the White Mountains National Forest. The village is home to colonial-style homes and boutique shops as well as some big-name stores and outlets. As well as the great shopping opportunities within North Conway, visitors to the town will also be able to hike, walk, bike and rock climb within the White Mountains. One of the best Bed and Breakfasts to stay at whilst in North Conway, New Hampshire is Cranmore Inn – a historic B&B that has been welcoming visitors since 1863.

Visit Lincoln/ North Woodstock: Lincoln and North Woodstock are 2 neighbouring towns located along the scenic Kancamagus Highway. If you are looking for unspoilt, New England beauty then North Woodstock in the place to go – you will be able to visit boutique stores, B&Bs, and explore the surrounding Mountains. However, its neighbouring town, Lincoln, is much more built up and offers visitors the chance to enjoy some family fun at the Whale’s Tale Water Park, stay at the beautiful River Walk Resort at Loon Mountain, enjoy fresh produce from the farmers market, and is a great base for exploring the surrounding mountains and National Forest.

Visit Bretton Woods: Bretton Woods takes visitors back to a time forgotten with its Mount Washington Cog Railway train ride through the great outdoors. Since the 1860s the train has travelled through the New Hampshire mountains and the train journey allows visitors to see New England’s highest mountain. If you catch the mountain on a clear day, you will be treated to incredible views and wonderful scenery for your 3-hour return train journey. For a modern take on a classic New England Bed and Breakfast, why not stay at the Omni Bretton Arms Inn at Mount Washington whilst in the area.

Visit Sugar Hill: Sugar Hill is, in our opinion, the loveliest village in the White Mountains National Forest, and its location is idea for exploring, walking, and hiking the surrounding mountains. Staying in Sugar Hill is convenient for those wanting to explore Franconia Notch State Park, the White Mountains Trail National Scenic Byway, the Flume Gorge and the aerial tramway to the top of Cannon Mountain. Whilst in Sugar Hill be sure to visit the towns great eateries including Harman’s Cheese & Country Store and Polly’s Pancake Parlor. June is a great time to visit Sugar Hill as the hillside becomes covered in colourful lupines – an infamous New England sight that is not to be missed if you are in the area! Whilst in Sugar Hill, one of the best Bed and Breakfasts to stay at, that is loved by our clients, is Sugar Hill Inn.

Best Time to Visit the White Mountains

Though there are things going on all throughout the year, our favourite time to visit the
White Mountains National Forest, New Hampshire is in Autumn as the trees become a rainbow of orange, yellow, and green hues. This begins annually in late September and is commemorated with a celebration within the town of Sugar Hill. Throughout the celebrations there will be market stalls, hand crafted goods, locally made food, and of course the picturesque autumnal scenery.
