California's two great cities make the classic twin centre, and they couldn't be more different. In San Francisco, ride the cable cars, take the ferry to Alcatraz and walk or cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge. In Los Angeles, swap fog for sunshine with Hollywood, Universal Studios, Rodeo Drive and the beaches of Santa Monica and Malibu. Las Vegas is around an hour's flight from Los Angeles or San Francisco, which makes it an easy second centre. Spend a few nights on the Strip for the shows, restaurants and pools, and take a day trip to the Grand Canyon or the Hoover Dam. Pair Vegas with Los Angeles for a city-and-entertainment holiday, or with the California coast or Palm Springs for a more relaxed first half. See our Las Vegas holidays.
There are no direct flights from the UK to Hawaii, so California makes the perfect stopover. Spend a few nights in San Francisco or Los Angeles to break the journey and get over the jet lag, then fly around five and a half to six hours to Oahu, Maui or Hawaii's Big Island. See both sides of the USA in one trip. Start in New York with Times Square, Central Park and the Statue of Liberty, then fly across the country to San Francisco or Los Angeles. For a slower pace, combine Northern California's wine country with the mountains. Napa Valley is about an hour north of San Francisco, with world-famous wineries, excellent restaurants and the Napa Valley Wine Train. Then drive around three hours to Lake Tahoe for clear blue water, boat trips, hiking in summer and skiing in winter. Many people add a few nights in San Francisco at the start or end.
You don't need to fly to enjoy a twin centre. Pair Los Angeles with San Diego, around two hours south by road or on the Pacific Surfliner train, for beaches, Balboa Park and a relaxed coastal pace. Or head about two hours inland to Palm Springs for desert sunshine, mid-century style, spas and golf. Families can add Disneyland in Anaheim, which sits between LA and San Diego. For a multi-centre holiday of 10–14 nights, we usually suggest four to seven nights in each. Allow at least three nights anywhere you want to explore properly, and remember that your first day after flying from the UK is often a short one. For Hawaii, five to seven nights on a single island, or ten or more across two islands, works well.
A internal flights between locations suits you if you'd rather unpack once or twice and explore each place in depth, with short flights in between. If you want to see as much as possible along the way, stopping somewhere new every night or two, a fly drive is a better fit. See our California self drive holidays.
